This is truly PINK FLOYD week! With the release of the Discovery, Immersion, Experience and Vinyl sets today and with Floyd fever all over the world, Pink Floyd remain one of the worlds best.
If like me you were one of those Floyd maniacs that ran out this morning, skipped work and did whatever needed to get ALL those box sets as soon as the shops opened – you were NOT disappointed. The packaging, artwork, and attention to detail are quite brilliant, and all the live, and studio mixes are simply out of this world. Pink Floyd never disappoint and it’s a testament to the longevity of this band.
I felt like I did many years ago as a first time young fan running into the shops to buy that album or hearing a rare live track for the first time – I was excited and in awe. The only other band that has that level of impact on me is Genesis.
When I was only a wee lad, I remember skipping school, heading to friends home and hearing live concerts like Oakland ’77 — these were defining moments for me as a fan and musician and oddly I always preferred those recordings to the studio albums; I just fell in love with the live approach, feel, honesty and freedom that music simply doesn’t seem to capture much these days.
Every time I put on one of my Fender Strat and head out on stage to play live with Comfortably Numb or even when I am at rehearsals with Numb working on the magic that is Pink Floyd, I always feel the same, honored to play the music and like that young lad all those years ago, just in love with the music.
To my fellow Floyd nuts, enjoy this time and love every moment! November brings us Wish You Were Here sets and February The Wall! If you are a night owl like me, its Floyd week on Jimmy Fallon, Nick Mason was on last night and Roger Waters performed In The Flesh with the Foo Fighters. Every night a band plays tribute to Floyd.
Who knows if any more will happen, after this, we still are blessed to have Roger Waters who continues to perform THE BEST SHOW ON EARTH (NO ONE does it better). Perhaps David Gilmour will do another solo album, maybe Nick Mason will…maybe they will and maybe they won’t.
So there you have it, one happy guy feeling like he did ‘way back when’ and still loving the music every bit as much.
